At WPPI this year I overheard DJ introduce someone to David Beckstead as one of his biggest inspirations. I did some math real quick and thought "well, if he inspired DJ...perhaps he could also inspire someone like me." DUH! :) I knew how beautiful Oregon is and thought I should see what it would take to get a Shoot With Beckstead workshop here. Turns out someone already took care of it and it was only a week away! So...I went on short notice and it was incredible. Beckstead has such true character...he simply loves what he does, and does what he loves...and that's about it. The rest just happens for him. And with so many of us looking for our place in this industry, he sets a great example. I'd really encourage anyone needing a great boost of inspiration to find a Shoot With Beckstead near them. Here are some shots....

I signed up for a Shoot with Beckstead for early June in Ohio. I can't wait, I've been wanting to do a seminar lately. Can you recommend any lens to bring - I'm thinking a 70-200 and 24-70...Unless I can get ahold of some primes. :)

Hey! One of the major themes of the workshop is learning to involve more lines and dimension into your compositions (and David means WAY more lines and dimension...wider works better for that). We usually shot within 10 yards or less of our models so the 70-200 was too much focal length. Take the 70-200 for sure because you'll use it some. The 24-70 will work well, but a 16-35 would be even better if you have one.
A thought on primes...with a group of photographers in relatively close proximity, your motion will be limited. I loved having zooms in case I needed just a bit more focal length to block out a head or camera or any sign of another photog without having to move and trip on others.

Thanks for the suggestion, I want to take full advantage of the workshop... I'll post a few images once it's said and done. I'll have to see about the 16-35 (probably rent it or borrow a friend)

BTW, your pics are awesome. I've been trying to get great black & whites like you last one... need more practice though.

You inspired a short bw tutorial on my blog (http://www.kevinmeyers.net/blog) :) Do you use Lightroom? If so, check it out and that should get you closer to conversions like the one you mentioned!

Hi you guys. I think the workshop will be terrific and fun.I'll be there all the way from Oregon. Well first I will be going to Ohio U to finish up some "should of done long ago" defending my thesis in Visual Communications.
I fly into Akron, then drive to Columbus for a night, then to Athens, then the next day back to Akron. I hope Ohio isn't a very long state! ha ha

If you send an email to Kassandra Beckstead swb@shootwithbeckstead.com she will get back with you and sign you up. I'm been talking with them and a few people who have already taken the workshop and it's all been positive feedback.

There is going to be a get acquainted party the night before held at Catherine's house so be sure and come to this. It's going to be a lot of fun- great networking not to mention shooting with David and all that he has to share!

Hey there kmeyers. I am in Eugene and Cohosting the beckstead workshop in ohio. I'd love to connect with some of you in PD. I don't see anyone from Eugene on pictage although there are several excellent photographers around this area.
I just joined and am feeling my way around. Actually missing the live chat right now as I could not find any link to get onto it and no response. Next time I'll catch it.
Nice to meet another Oregonian. Sherrlyn<a href="http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t52/badooba/?action=view¤t=Sherrlyn2sm.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t52/badooba/Sherrlyn2sm.jpg" border="0" alt="http://www.borkgren.com"></a>
